| Letter from the Chairman |
![]() John Rainey I am John Rainey, chairman and co-founder along with my wife Anne Edens Rainey, of Cordillera Preservation Foundation. We at the CPF are pleased to welcome you to our website. We invite you to review the mission and history of our organization, as well as our first three preservation and restoration projects in the majestic Vail Valley. Our goals for this foundation are simple: to foster an appreciation of history by preserving and restoring buildings of historic significance for future generations, and creating a unique destination recreational and educational experience for the enjoyment of all visitors to the valley. We’re delighted to showcase our preservation and restoration efforts since the CPF was founded in 2003. With the help of generous donors and hard-working volunteers in the Cordillera community, we have successfully addressed preservation and restoration projects at three historic sites in Cordillera—the one-room Bearden cabin dating back nearly a century, and Bearcat’s cabin where Ellis Bearden spent the majority of his life in this valley, both restorations, and the preservation of the sod-roofed pair of Penny cabins with the incredible views. Restoring these two homes to their original quaint beauty, and preserving as we could the Penny Cabins, showcase wonderful examples of dwellings from America’s new western frontier of the early 1900s, enabling future generations better to appreciate the past. With the Bearcat Stables widely utilized by Cordillera residents and visitors, trail rides and tours of the area are a regular pastime. The newly restored Bearden homesteads—Bearden Cabin and Bearcat’s Cabin—enhance a Vail Valley horseback riding experience by providing perfect picnicking spots. Bikers and hikers, too, can visit these restored properties, which create inviting and breathtaking rest stops for weary travelers. A new comfort station is being constructed adjacent to Bearcat’s Cabin for the convenience of our visitors. I know that many homeowners, neighbors and visitors alike cherish this region as much as my wife Anne and I do. With the guidance of a dedicated Board of Directors, this foundation is committed to preserving and restoring the properties that dot this glorious landscape. We hope your shared love of Cordillera will motivate you to join us in our preservation and restoration endeavors by donating your time and money to the CPF. Please get in touch to tell us what you think of our completed projects, and where you think we should go next! We thank you for your interest in the Cordillera Preservation Foundation, and look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, |
